Autumn two: What are the Wonders of the world?

Welcome back to Autumn 2 at Swarcliffe Primary, we hope that you have all had a lovely break and are ready for the exciting work that we have ahead in the next 7 weeks. Our topic for the next half term is the Seven Wonders of the World.

English

In English this half term, we will be reading the Iron Man by Ted Hughes. In our first piece of writing based on this story we will re-write the first chapter as a first-person narrative from the point of view of the Iron Man himself. When writing we will attempt to include different sentence types such as expanded noun phrases, AS sentences, list sentences and adverbials. Excitingly, this half term we will also be studying the Seven Wonders of the World and our next piece of writing will revolve around this: we will write a non-chronological report based on these. Finally, our superstar write for the half term will also be a non-chronological report based on North America; we will look at the geography on the continent, the different countries and also focus in on the Rocky Mountains.

Spellings Focus we are continuing to use Spelling Shed to deliver spellings.

Our spelling focuses for this half term include;

  • Pre-fixes such as re, dis and miss
  • Strategies for spelling common 3/4 words
  • Remember Spelling Shed can be accessed at home.

Science:

Science this half term promises to be electrifying! In our learning, we will be looking at electricity and how it is used. We will start by looking at what electricity is and where it comes from. After this we will attempt to create our own circuits (a skill we will use again in DT) and look at the difference between insulators and conductors. Throughout all of learning we will concentrate on how to use electricity safely and look at why this is important.

Maths

Our learning in Maths this half term is all about multiplication and division. Each and every week we will focus on different times tables and look at the links between these. We are excited to see how these alongside our extra times tables work will improve our fluency and accuracy. We will also at the end of the half term look at how we can use our multiplication skills to measure by finding the area of different rectangular shapes.

 Children can also practice their times tables at home by logging into their TTRockstars account.

Design technology

In DT, we are going to be looking at the Seven Wonders of the World. We are going to research these and then attempt to build our own small-scale version of the Colosseum in Rome. As we build this we will use our learning from Science to place an electric circuit inside our build to make it light up.

Computing

For computing this half term, we will look at how to use search engines effectively. We will look at the different information we can gather from search engines and also focus on the need to ask questions effectively to gather the information we are looking for. We will use these lessons to help us research the information we need for our non- chronological reports that we will be writing in English.

Geography:

In geography this half term, we will look at improving our locational knowledge. Our learning will also give us an exciting opportunity to use fieldwork. We will start the half term by looking at the Northern and Southern hemisphere and the lines of latitude and longitude; we will discover how we can use these to locate different places including the Seven Wonders of the World. After this, we will move on to look at the topic of North America and then focus on the United States of America and the Rocky Mountains
