Autumn One: How do you train a dragon?
First all welcome back. We are so excited to start this year and hope you are all ready for a year of excitement, learning and fun.
Our Class Novel this half term is George and the Dragon
English
In English this half term, we will be focusing on our class text: George and the Dragon. We will be first using our FANTASTICs to help us write a character description about the beast of the story. When writing we will attempt to include different sentence types such as expanded noun phrases and adverbials. After this we have the excitement of Roald Dahl day, which will give us chance to look at some of his amazing characters and then use these to create our own pieces of writing. We will then return to our class story to write instructions on how to catch a dragon based on what we have learnt in the story. Our final piece of writing we will be a poem based on the harvest festival.
Spellings Focus we are continuing to use Spelling Bee to deliver spellings.
Our spelling focuses for this half term include;
- Pre-fixes
- Strategies for spelling common 3/4 words
Science
In science this half term will look at animals including humans. We will first focus on the nutrition people and animals. We will look in detail at the nutrition humans need in order to survive and compare how this is different to what animals need. We will then look at food chains and finally the human skeleton.
Maths
Our learning in Maths this half term will revolve around place value and addition and subtraction. We will look at first understanding the value of the different digits within numbers and the different ways in which numbers can be partitioned. Once we have mastered this we will move on to the tricky concept of rounding, before finally turning our attention to addition and subtraction when carrying and exchanging is required. We cannot wait to get started.
Throughout the year, we will have a huge focus on times tables fluency to support children with the multiplication check at the end of year 4. Children can also practice at home by logging into their TTRockstars account.
Design technology
This half term design and technology promises to be incredibly exciting as we are going to research, plan and then cook our own meals. When doing this we will have a focus around harvest. We will also be using our learning in science to ensure that we produce a meal which is nutritious and meets the needs of the human diet.
Computing
Our computing this half term is going to based in becoming coders. We are going to attempt to build our own scene including a dragon. For us to do this successfully we are going to learn how to use some different devices such as timers, repeats and actions. We will then attempt to test our programme and debug any issues we encounter.
Art:
Continuing with the theme of dragons in art we will use clay to create our own dragon eyes. We will plan, design and sculpt our own final pieces.
