Welcome to Upper Key Stage Two

How did we evolve?

First of all, a huge welcome back to everyone, we hope you are as excited to come back as we are. Our learning this year starts with an exciting look into the past; over the course of this half term we will be looking at how humans have evolved over thousands of years. Further to this we will also have the chance to look at the time period of the stone age to iron age. This part of our learning will lead to us going on a fantastic trip to experience life in the stone age.

English

Our story our half term is the classic Stig of the dump. We hope you will enjoy reading this much as we do. Our first piece of writing from this story will be a character description all about Stig. In this piece of writing you will be challenged to use specific vocabulary and a range of different sentence types such as similes, expanded noun phrases and metaphors. We will then follow this with a newspaper report about the robbery that takes place in the book, it will be crucial that we explain in great detail about Barney’s heroics. Our final piece of writing this half term will look at our important person (Charles Darwin). You will write a biography detailing all about his work into evolution.

Maths

Maths will start this year with a review of place value. We will be looking at numbers up to one million, comparing numbers, rounding and ordering. Once we have successfully mastered this we will move on to the four operations first concentrating on addition and subtraction.

History

In history we will look at the changes that occurred in Britain from the stone age to the iron age.

Computing

We will be creating our own database about animals from the Galapagos island. To do this we will use purple mash. Your challenge will be to identify the correct questions you will need to sort these animals effectively.

Science

In science we will explore evolution and inheritance, focusing on recognising how living things have changed over time. We will also look at the different ways in which living things produce offspring of the same kind, but then explore how these offspring vary from their parents and are not identical. When studying different animals we will focus on how these animals have adapted (changed) to suit their environment.

We are continuing with the Homework Pyramid this year. Children have a range of tasks that they can choose from, chosen homework tasks should then be completed and handed in each Wednesday.

PE will still continue on a Friday with the coaches so children should ensure they are wearing their new school PE Kit which was provided at the beginning of the year.
