Yr 5 - saturn

Summer Term 1

Welcome back everyone! This next half term is going to be filled with lots of new and exciting learning adventures!

Here are some clues:

The author we are going to be studying in literacy has the initials MM.

The place we are going to be studying in geography is very hot yet VERY wet!

Can you guess what we will be learning about this half term? I hope your ready!

Our final clue about our topic was found in Tom Gibson's suitcase! We will be learning about...

THE RAINFOREST

In our geography work we will be looking at human and physical features of the Amazon rainforest in South America. We will ask geographical questions, study maps and think about the features of such a fantastic place.

In our literacy work we will be enjoying Michael Morpurgo's story of an incredible greyhound -

Born to Run

We will think about the characters; look at the work of the RSPCA; discuss grehound racing and eventually write our own version of this amazing story!

As artists we will work collabortively and independently in various animal work. We will develop our drawing, collage and painting techniques.

During numeracy lessons we will look at finding multiples and factors of numbers as well as developing our understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages.

To make the most out of your learning time, ensure you arrive to school on time ready to listen and challenge yourself!

Spring Term 2

I hope everyone is feeling relaxed and ready for a second instalment of the ancient Egyptians!

Focus Friday saw an amazing display of knowledge, activities and fun in Saturn's classroom! I am sure all visitors were impressed with what we had to share and I know they all learnt something about the ancient Egyptians.

This half term we are going to build on what we have learnt, and think about Egypt as a country and how they worked hard to keep their civilisation healthy!

Geography - we will look at different maps of Egypt in order to locate key landmarks and places. We will also study the importance of the River Nile.

D&T - we will be creating our very own ancient Egyptian death masks using a special material called Mod Roc.

Literacy - we will read and enjoy some short ancient Egyptian stories before moving on to write some persuasive pieces.

Numeracy - we will be finding the area and perimeter of ancient Egyptian tombs.

Science - we will be looking at life cycles of plants.

SPRING TERM 1

A massive welcome back to everyone in Saturn! Miss West and Mrs Bates hope everyone has had a restful, yet exciting Christmas break - we hope you are all ready for a new year of learning and fun!

More information on learning for 2013 will follow soon (this is Miss West's favourite period in history EVER). But here is a clue to help you...

The curse of the mummy's tomb is said to be true!!

WHAT A MORNING!!!!!!! We were all excited to be back, enjoying a welcome back assembly when Mrs Rothwell and Mrs Foley caused such a fuss about my Egyptian fact! Not only did we get in trouble for arguing about who was telling the truth - all the other teachers joined in too!!

Miss Taylor argued that Victorians are much more fascinating, while Mrs Park said Tudors are the best period in history!! In class 5 we are going to prove that the ancient Egyptians are, by far, the most amazing people to study.

So, the challenge is set... to prove over the next 5 weeks that the Egyptians are truely the most interesting period of history! How are we going to do this? Read below...

In Literacy we will be looking at non-chronological reports and will eventually write one on the ancient Egyptians.

In ICT we will create multi-media presentations (PowerPoint) to share and communicate exciting facts we have found out about the Egyptian way of life.

In PE we will become ancient Egyptian dancers. We will learn lots of movements and develop our own routines.

In DT we will be making our very own death masks...just like Tutunkhamen's mask!!!

Come on Year 5 - we are going to prove ancient Egypt is the best!!!!!!!

Autumn Term 2

Remembrance Week

I hope everyone is ready and refreshed for our second term of fun, learning and a little bit of MAGIC!

This half term is going to see the most exciting learning take place...I cannot wait to get started!

The first week back is going to be interesting as we have some of our children going on residential to Kingswood - how exciting! The rest of us will be thinking about 'Remembrance Day' during the first week.

In literacy we are going to write about Remembrance Day in a non-chronological report. In class we will be thinking about the history behind the day and the many lives that have been lost during past wars.
In art we are going to be thinking about poppies and what they symbolise. We will be using paint to help us.

More information about the rest of this exciting half term is to follow.

MAGIC CIRCUS

So...we received a mysterious and magical parcel from a strange wizard in an unplanned assembly!! Every class got a brown parcel...year 5 got...a magician's hat!! This has been very useful for our topic work this half term.

We are looking at some visual literacy this half term called 'Magik Circus', where a poor girl desperately tries to find the perfect artist for her failing circus. We are going to work on producing our own film scripts.

In our topic work we will think about the history of the 'Circus' and how they have changed and developed over time. We have already found out the first major circus was called 'Circus Maximus' in Rome.
We will also consider the travelling circus' and how they must travel around and between countries to entertain people with their acts.

Cinderella & Rockerfella

KS2 are putting on the performance of Cinderella & Rockerfella for Christmas. The characters are cast and the songs are being rehearsed everyday! We are all working really hard to make it perfect for the big night!!

Welcome back Saturn!!

Being & Belonging

WOW! What a start to the new school year! We have all come back ready to learn and have achieved so much already. Our brand new classroom is up and running - it’s perfect for all our learning adventures.

It is important we come to school every day and arrive on time so they are ready for our PACT time (Personalised Accelerated Children's Targets). PACT time is our time to brush up on our basic skills for grammar, spelling, handwriting and mental maths.

Our PE day is Tuesday so you will all need your white t-shirts and shorts! Bring a water bottle to school too, for those times when you need to quench your thirst.

This half term we will be thinking about ourselves, others and our communities. We will consider where we come from, where we are and where we would like to be in the future!

Miss West and Mrs Bates are ready for a half term of learning, fun and opportunity – are you??
